Pedro Marquès Fedelich, manager of Binillobet: “Repeating a success like this is very difficult, but next year we will try again”

C.M./Alaior - Pedro Marquès Fedelich, 48, is the breeder and manager of Binillobet, in es Mercadal, one of the standout names from the latest edition of the Fira del Camp, where he was the main winner and collected the largest number of awards. He has worked at Binillobet for twenty years, a journey marked by perseverance, livestock care and a constant drive for improvement. His career has made him one of the leading voices in Menorca’s livestock farming sector.

Binillobet Doberman Princesa was awarded both Grand Champion Cow and Adult Champion Cow, while Binillobet Hanans Cendra received the Intermediate Champion Cow award. Did you expect to win so many prizes?

No, honestly we did not. We knew we had a very good cow, but we are also aware that everyone has excellent livestock, so winning is very difficult.

Had you previously received other important recognitions at the Alaior Holstein Morphological Cattle Competition?

Yes, always. Since we arrived at Binillobet we have taken part in the competition, and every year we have won at least one first prize. Regarding championships, we won in 2017 and 2019, and we have been recognised as best breeders for nine years. In addition, this year we finished second as breeders, making it four consecutive years achieving this result.

What do you consider essential in order to repeat these successes?

Winning these awards again is very difficult, but we achieved it with the cow Fátima in 2017 and 2019. Very few people manage to do that. Even so, next year we will try again, although we know it will not be easy at all.

What work lies behind these results?

The Morphological Competition has reached its 38th edition at a time when farms are closing, although the Holstein cattle population remains stable. Does this fair help encourage the sector?

It is a difficult time, with rising fuel prices, fertilisers —which are also very expensive— and, lately, cereals. All these are factors that affect us and make the situation even more complicated. Nevertheless, we must continue working to overcome these difficulties.

All these circumstances do not make you lose enthusiasm for continuing to participate in morphological competitions…

As you could see, the Fira del Camp is a meeting point for colleagues and friends. The sense of fellowship experienced here is special, and it continues when we meet outside this setting.
