The Roger de Flor Brut Nature, recommended this week by Vinum Menorca, is an elegant cava true to the tradition of the Codorníu Group, a historic name in the production of quality sparkling wines within the DO Cava. It is a reserve cava, made from the classic varieties Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada, fully expressing the Mediterranean character and freshness of the Penedès vineyards. Its recent disgorgement in April 2025 ensures optimal vibrancy and aromatic expression.
Appearance
It shows a pale yellow colour with golden highlights, clean and bright. The bubbles are fine, persistent and well integrated, forming a constant bead that reflects a well-managed second fermentation and balanced ageing.
Nose
The first impression is fresh and straightforward, with notes of green apple, pear and ripe citrus, accompanied by more complex nuances of toasted bread, brioche and raw almond, resulting from lees ageing. With aeration, subtle floral hints emerge, along with a touch of anise and Mediterranean herbs, adding depth and elegance.
Palate
On the palate it is dry, fresh and very well balanced, with a lively yet integrated acidity that gives length and persistence. The absence of dosage (Brut Nature) allows the base wine’s character to shine through: purity, freshness and a creamy texture. The finish is clean and slightly mineral, with lingering notes of white fruit and toasted nuts.
The cava pays tribute to Roger de Flor (1267–1305), a Catalan adventurer, knight and mercenary in the service of the Crown of Aragon. Son of a falconer to Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire, he became admiral and leader of the Almogavars, legendary troops renowned for their combat skills and expansion across the eastern Mediterranean. Roger de Flor symbolises courage, Mediterranean spirit and audacity, values reflected in the cava’s frank, noble and persistent character.
Grilled or oven-baked white fish (dentex, red porgy, grouper or John Dory).
Traditional seafood stews and casseroles.
Shellfish such as cockles, steamed mussels with mayonnaise, fried sea anemones or clams in green sauce.
Aged Maó-Menorca cheeses.
White meats such as chicken with prawns, rabbit with lobster, stuffed turkey, quail with pastarral or capon with cuscussó.
Roger de Flor Brut Nature is a clear, elegant and authentic cava, faithful to its origins and the philosophy of the Codorníu Group, perfect from aperitif to emblematic Menorcan dishes.
