October Brings the Gastronomic Season to a Close

October once again marks the end of the tourist season in Menorca, with many restaurants located in holiday resorts beginning to close for the year between the 17th and 31st of the month. These are weeks of final services, farewells to regular customers, emptying cold rooms and pantries, and beginning to take stock after months of intense work.

The closing calendar is not the same for everyone. Some establishments will shut their doors in the middle of the month, coinciding with the sharpest decline in visitor numbers, while others will remain open until the final weekend of October, taking advantage of flights, last-minute bookings and weather conditions that still allow people to enjoy outdoor terraces. However, by All Saints' Day, much of the restaurant sector in tourist areas will have brought its season to an end.

This change is particularly noticeable in the holiday resorts around Ciutadella, but also throughout the rest of the island. Cala en Bosc, Son Xoriguer, Cala Blanca, Santandria, Los Delfines and Cala Morell, among other areas, gradually begin to recover their winter tranquillity after months of intense gastronomic activity.

Behind every shutter that comes down lies much more than the end of a season. There are kitchen and front-of-house teams that have worked at an intense pace for months, business owners who have had to manage costs, staffing, purchasing and forecasts, and local suppliers who have maintained constant relationships with restaurants, bars and hotels. The end of the season also affects fishermen, farmers, distributors, wineries, cheese producers, bakeries and an entire network whose livelihoods depend, directly or indirectly, on tourism.

October is also a good time to observe how visitors' eating habits have changed. Whether there is growing interest in discovering Menorcan produce, seeking out traditional dishes, tasting the island's cheeses, local fish, Menorcan meat or wines produced here, or whether the opposite is happening.

When the holiday resorts switch off their stoves, gastronomic activity will once again move mainly to the island's towns, where restaurants open throughout the year will take centre stage during the autumn and winter months.

And so another season comes to an end. It is a time of rest for many professionals, but also of reflection, maintenance, renovations and preparation. Because behind every door that closes in October, thoughts are already turning, almost without realising it, towards the following spring.
