The Alaior Town Council marks once again the feast of Saint Didacus with the traditional preparation and distribution of the Saint’s buns, one of the most cherished and deep-rooted traditions in the town.
The feast of Saint Didacus of Alcalá, celebrated on 13 November, has once again brought together a group of volunteers who, between yesterday Thursday and today Friday, have prepared and baked more than 1,000 buns. The work has been carried out with the support of the Can Xeixa bakery (formerly Can Florencio). To make the buns, around 13 kg of dough are used, made with flour, a little cooked butter, suet and anise tea. Shaped like a rose, the buns open as they bake, symbolising the miracle that inspires this celebration.
On Sunday, 16 November, at 10:30 a.m., a solemn mass will be held in the church of Santa Eulàlia, during which the buns will be blessed and distributed.
This tradition, which years ago survived mainly within the family sphere and was close to disappearing, was revived by the Alaior Town Council, which reinstated it in the festivities in honour of Saint Didacus. The celebration recalls the miracle of the loaves and roses attributed to the saint, and tradition holds that keeping one of these buns brings prosperity and protection to families throughout the year.
The buns will be distributed during the mass, as well as to residents of the municipal care home and delivered to the homes of those who cannot attend.
The Alaior Town Council expresses its sincere gratitude to all volunteers and the collaborating bakery for their dedication, which year after year keeps this valuable tradition alive, a symbol of identity and unity for the whole community.
