Traditional All Saints' Day fritters, known locally as bunyols, will once again take centre stage in Ciutadella on Saturday 31 October, with two events organised by the parishes of Sant Antoni Maria Claret and Sant Rafel. Both celebrations revive the custom of sharing these traditional sweets on the eve of All Saints' Day, one of the most deeply rooted dates in Menorca's festive and gastronomic calendar.
The two parishes have prepared different activities, but both share a common theme: fritters as a way of bringing members of the community together.
The parish of Sant Antoni Maria Claret, with the participation of its associated Scout group, has organised a fritter sale on Saturday 31 October at 8 pm, after Mass.
Visitors will be able to purchase five fritters for €2.50, in an initiative combining traditional baking with the community activities of the Scout movement.
The sale offers an opportunity to enjoy one of the most characteristic sweets of the season while taking part in an activity organised within the parish community.
Meanwhile, the parish of Sant Rafel, also in Ciutadella, has announced a fritter gathering on Saturday 31 October, after the Eucharistic celebration, to be held in the parish courtyard.
This event includes a special feature that strengthens its participatory character: visitors can bring their own fritter dough to the parish, where it will be fried for them.
This allows families and individuals who prepare fritters at home to share their creations and take an active part in the celebration. It is also a way of preserving the passing down of household recipes, traditionally handed from one generation to the next.
Fritters form part of the traditional confectionery associated with All Saints' Day and the beginning of November. In Menorca, their preparation has been linked for generations to family kitchens, neighbourhood gatherings and community celebrations.
They are made from fried dough, with different recipes and variations depending on each household's customs. Traditionally, the fritters are finished with sugar, contrasting with their soft interior and the golden surface developed during frying.
Beyond the ingredients, much of their gastronomic value lies in the ritual of making and sharing them. Preparing the dough, shaping the fritters, frying them and serving them freshly made are practices that form part of the culinary memories of many Menorcan families.
The celebrations at Sant Antoni Maria Claret and Sant Rafel show how this tradition remains present in everyday life in Ciutadella. For a few hours, the parishes become places where popular gastronomy helps strengthen bonds between generations.
This Saturday, therefore, traditional fritters will once again bring people together around a simple but meaningful custom, keeping the flavours of All Saints' Day alive.
