With the scientific name Dentex dentex, the common dentex lives almost always on rocky bottoms and sometimes exceeds fifteen kilos in weight. Its body is more laterally compressed than that of the common seabream, although it is often mistaken for it, as well as for its close relatives such as the pink dentex (Dentex gibbosus) or the Moroccan dentex (Dentex maroccanus); some people even mistake it for a seabream.

It is caught at dawn fishing grounds or using longlines with large hooks.

It is a white-fleshed fish, though somewhat dry, and it is usually prepared as a stew, fried, grilled, baked or cooked in salt.
