White Weaver

Bep Al·lès/Ciutadella - Scientifically known as Trachinus draco, the white weever is one of the many species of weever fish found along our coasts.

Together with the black weever (Trachinus radiatus) and the spotted weever or rock weever (Trachinus araneus), it belongs to a group of highly venomous fish. However, it is also highly valued for making fish soups, stews, broths and traditional fish balls.

Weever fish possess venomous spines located on the first dorsal fin and on both sides of the gill openings. Their stings are extremely painful and can, in some cases, lead to serious complications.

This is a fish best handled by experienced cooks and fishmongers, so it is advisable to buy it at the market with the venomous spines already removed.
