The Festes de la Mare de Déu de Gràcia, celebrated in Maó on 7 and 8 September, also have the flavour of Menorcan cuisine. This year, private chef Bàrbara Lluch has created a special proposal for those who want to enjoy the patron saint festivities to the fullest without spending hours in the kitchen: a menu of traditional dishes, prepared to order and ready to be served directly at the table.
The initiative revives recipes closely linked to Menorca’s family cooking, dishes that have traditionally been part of festive lunches, family gatherings and shared celebrations. The idea behind the proposal is precisely this: recognisable cooking, rooted in the Menorcan recipe book and with a festive spirit, adapted to a convenient service that allows customers to combine different dishes.
Among the options are Menorcan-style stuffed aubergines, one of the island’s most recognisable summer dishes; meatballs with almond sauce, a preparation closely associated with traditional Menorcan cookery; meat cannelloni and spinach and pine nut cannelloni, as well as meat in sauce and chicken with peppers.
The dishes are sold in trays serving four people, with prices ranging from 35 to 43 euros depending on the preparation. Customers can choose whichever dishes they prefer and combine them freely, with a minimum order of one tray for each selected speciality.
The proposal also includes a sweet ending specially created for the festivities: a gin and lemonade ensaimada, made in collaboration with Sa Sucreria, bringing into pastry one of the flavour combinations most closely associated with Menorca’s popular celebrations.
Bàrbara Lluch also offers home delivery in Maó on Sunday, 6 September, between 12 noon and 2 p.m., with an additional charge of five euros per order. Orders can be placed until 2 September.
The initiative fits into a trend that is becoming increasingly prominent in contemporary gastronomy: recovering traditional recipes without giving up the convenience of new ways of enjoying food. In this case, it offers an obvious added value: allowing the Festes de Gràcia table to retain the flavours of tradition while those celebrating can devote their time to enjoying the streets, the horses, the music and the festive atmosphere.
Because during patron saint festivities too, gastronomy remains one of the most direct ways of celebrating and preserving Menorca’s culinary identity.
