Foodies on Menorca
Bep Al·lès/Cala en Forcat - Some of Menorca's finest pastries are found not in bakeries but in family kitchens. Coca topped with apricots, plums and brebas (early figs) is one of the island's most cherished homemade recipes. Traditionally prepared with fruit freshly picked from family orchards during June, July and August, it is a true celebration of the Mediterranean summer.
Every household has its own version, yet they all share the same idea: a light, fluffy dough topped with ripe seasonal fruit. Apricots bring sweetness and fragrance, plums add a pleasant touch of acidity, while brebas contribute a rich, honeyed texture and flavour that heralds the end of june.
These cocas are baked to be shared after lunch, during afternoon snacks or at family gatherings, keeping alive a culinary tradition passed down through generations.
More than a dessert, they represent Menorca's rural heritage, seasonal produce and the simple pleasures of homemade baking.
