Sant Lluís is saying goodbye to one of its most emblematic establishments. Las Campanas bakery is closing its doors, bringing to an end a history closely linked to bread, traditional Menorcan pastries and the everyday life of several generations of local residents.
For decades, Las Campanas has been one of the leading names in artisan baking in the municipality. Marc Anglada represented the third generation of bakers in a family business that moved to its present premises on Avinguda de sa Pau in 1973, where the wood-fired oven was still preserved and adapted over the years to meet new production needs.
Its best-known products included traditional country bread, rustic baguettes, German-style bread and ensaimadas, alongside Menorcan specialities such as sofrit and apricot cocas, crespells, rubiols and other products associated with the traditional calendar.
The quality of its work was recognised in 2019 with the Best Bakery in Menorca Award, presented by the Balearic Association of Gastronomic Journalists and Writers, a distinction that highlighted Las Campanas’ history, craftsmanship and commitment to preserving the island’s baking tradition.
The closure of Las Campanas means the loss of another historic village business, one of those places that forms part of Menorca’s gastronomic and emotional heritage. What remains is the memory of countless early mornings with the oven alight, freshly baked bread and a way of understanding the craft passed down from generation to generation.
