Cas Comte’s historic stables join the visitor route at Torre-saura Palace

Foodie travellers looking to discover a side of Menorca more closely connected with history, the countryside and the island’s great aristocratic houses have a new reason to visit the Torre-saura Palace in Ciutadella. The historic Cas Comte stables, previously closed to the public, have now been added to the palace visitor route.

Located in the heart of the building, the stables preserve their stone walls, original vaults and cobbled floor. These architectural features offer a glimpse into an area that played an important role in the daily life and operation of the palace for centuries. Horses were used not only for ceremonial journeys, but also for agricultural work, transporting goods and other service tasks.

The visit is particularly interesting for gastronomic travellers because it helps explain the historic relationship between Menorca’s great estates, the land, agriculture and livestock farming. For centuries, these activities were major sources of both income and prestige for the Torre-saura household. That connection is still visible during the Sant Joan festivities, when horses from estates associated with the family return to the stables and temporarily restore them to their original purpose.

The newly opened area also provides context for the importance of livestock breeding and the development of the family’s horse stock, particularly during the period of the fifth Count of Torre-saura.

For foodie visitors, this makes an excellent addition to a day in Ciutadella: explore the palace and its newly accessible stables, wander through the historic centre and then enjoy a lunch or dinner devoted to Menorcan cuisine. It is a cultural experience that helps reveal how closely the island’s food traditions are connected to its landscape and rural history.
