Balearic Islands take a step towards becoming European Region of Gastronomy 2030

The Balearic Islands have taken an important step towards becoming European Region of Gastronomy 2030. On 1 October, at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), the document supporting the archipelago’s candidacy for this European recognition was formally signed.

Among the representatives of the gastronomic sector taking part was Bep Al·lès, editor of Foodies on Menorca, who signed the document on behalf of the Associació de Periodistes i Escriptors Gastronòmics de Balears.

The candidacy now opens a period of intensive work in which institutions, producers, restaurateurs, gastronomy professionals, organisations and specialist media will need to join forces to build a project representing the culinary diversity of all the islands.

In this process, Menorca’s experience as European Region of Gastronomy 2022 can provide an important reference point. That recognition helped to increase the visibility of local produce, Menorcan cuisine, producers and the island’s gastronomic heritage.

The Balearic Islands are therefore beginning a journey towards 2030, with the challenge of making gastronomy a tool for promoting the territory, culture, local produce and sustainability.
