Vermouth: A Journey Through the Past, Present and Future of a Drink with Soul at Casino 17 de Gener

This Friday, October 10th at 8:00 p.m., the Assembly Hall of Casino 17 de Gener will host a must-attend event for lovers of liquid culture and Mediterranean-inspired gastronomy. Under the title “Past, Present and Future of Vermouth”, master craftsman and distiller Josep Maria Natta will deliver a keynote lecture on one of the most emblematic beverages of our gastronomic heritage.

With over thirty years of experience at the helm of Antonio Nadal Distilleries, Natta is one of the most respected figures in the Spanish distilling scene. Trained in Chemistry at the University of the Balearic Islands and holding a PhD in Chemical Engineering, he combines scientific rigor with the artisanal sensitivity that the craft of liqueur making demands. He currently combines his professional work with teaching in the Master’s in Distilled Beverages and Liqueurs at the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, where he shares with future distillers his passion for innovation and respect for tradition.

During the talk, Natta will guide the audience through a fascinating journey across the history of vermouth—from its origins as a medicinal remedy to its establishment as a symbol of togetherness and the aperitif par excellence. He will also unveil new trends shaping the future of this beverage: from reviving native herbs and classic recipes to exploring more subtle aromatic balances adapted to contemporary tastes.

The master distiller will also share some of his team’s experiences developing signature vermouths and gins for Michelin-starred chefs from Mallorca and Catalonia, as well as for prestigious international hotel chains. Thanks to this innovative spirit, many of the products created under his direction can now be found in markets across Germany, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, China, Taiwan, and the United States. His career has also led him to represent Spirits of Spain within the Spanish Federation of Food and Drink Industries (FIAB) and Spirits Europe, organizations that safeguard the quality and international projection of the sector.

The conference will conclude with a tasting of Ca Sa Miss vermouth, considered by many experts to be the best in the world, allowing attendees to experience firsthand the complexity and elegance of this artisanal creation. It will be a unique opportunity to learn, taste, and converse with one of the great names in Mediterranean distillation.

The event, organized by Casino 17 de Gener and Foodies on Menorca, with the collaboration of Balearia and Fincas Llonga’s, is part of the center’s cultural program, which seeks to bring quality topics related to gastronomy, science, and local tradition closer to the public.

With “Past, Present and Future of Vermouth”, Casino 17 de Gener and Foodies on Menorca invite everyone to rediscover a drink that is much more than an aperitif: it is a story of knowledge, landscapes, and aromas that connects generations. A must for all who believe that good drinking can also be a form of culture.
