The Insular Council promotes the modernization of the municipal slaughterhouse of Maó with an investment of 850,000 euros

The Minister of Economy and General Services, Maria Antònia Taltavull, and the insular director of Economy, Alicia Martí, together with the mayor of Maó City Council, Héctor Pons, visited this Wednesday, September 3, the works that are being carried out at the municipal slaughterhouse of Maó.

Last December 2023, the Insular Council of Menorca signed a collaboration agreement with the municipal council to carry out improvements to the infrastructure of the Maó slaughterhouse and to cover the cost of expenses related to the SANDACHS. The Department of Economy and General Services of the Insular Council granted a total amount of 850,000 euros to carry out the intervention, of which 250,000 euros are current expenses and another 600,000 euros are investment expenses.

In an addendum signed last October 2024, several new actions were specified that had to be carried out. Currently, the facilities room is being renovated, which includes the replacement of the boiler and a new roof, as well as the truck cleaning area. In addition, new accesses are being built for cattle and a water softener and new cold rooms have been installed. Likewise, the system for controlling worker hygiene will be improved. The works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Slaughterhouses are a fundamental part of the supply of meat for the consumption of the population of our island, while also representing the link between producers and consumers in the value chain of the livestock sector and bringing local products closer to the consumer.

“The reform of the municipal slaughterhouse in Maó, carried out thanks to the intervention of the Insular Council of Menorca, is a clear commitment to guaranteeing the quality and food safety of the products that reach our tables. This infrastructure is vital for the livestock sector and for the economic development of Menorca, as it allows bringing local products closer to the consumer with the maximum guarantees”, explained the Minister of the Department, Maria Antònia Taltavull.
