PIME, IBASSAL and restaurateurs launch a campaign to prevent heat-related risks at work

PIME Menorca, the Balearic Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IBASSAL) and the Menorcan Association of Cafés, Bars and Restaurants have launched a campaign to prevent the effects of high temperatures in the workplace, especially in the hospitality sector.

The initiative coincides with the start of the summer season, when heat becomes one of the main risk factors for many activities carried out outdoors or in spaces with a high thermal load, such as kitchens, dining rooms and terraces.

The campaign promotes simple, practical measures to protect workers’ health while also strengthening the quality of service during the months of greatest tourist activity. The recommendations include ensuring access to fresh water, keeping ventilation and extraction systems in good condition, providing shaded or rest areas, planning breaks and reorganising certain tasks during the hottest hours of the day.

The organisations behind the campaign point out that prevention must begin before the first symptoms of heat stress appear. Specific materials will also be provided for kitchens, dining rooms and terraces, as well as guidelines for establishment managers and for welcoming new staff during the season.

Under the slogan “Prevent today to serve better tomorrow”, the campaign aims to convey that taking care of teams is not only a preventive obligation, but also an investment in workplace wellbeing, organisation, quality of service and business sustainability.
