June improves the start of the season, although major differences between sectors persist

PIME Menorca’s survey shows that almost four out of ten businesses increased their turnover compared with June 2025, although the restaurant sector and active tourism continue to lag behind the overall pace of activity.

PIME Menorca has presented the results of its monthly survey on turnover trends among businesses operating in the island’s main tourism-related sectors. The figures for June show an overall improvement compared with the same period last year, although significant differences remain between individual activities.

A total of 37.74% of the businesses surveyed reported an increase in turnover compared with June 2025, while 34.72% maintained similar levels and 27.55% recorded a decline. As a result, almost three out of every four businesses either maintained or improved their activity during the month.

The results represent an improvement on June last year, when businesses reporting a drop in turnover were in the majority. Nevertheless, PIME Menorca stresses that it is still too early to draw conclusions about the season as a whole, as July and August will account for a large proportion of tourism activity.

Rural hotels and car hire companies record the strongest results

Rural tourism accommodation posted the most favourable performance of the month. Sixty per cent of the establishments surveyed increased their turnover compared with the previous year, while the remaining 40% maintained similar levels. No business reported a decline, confirming that demand for accommodation is stabilising.

Car hire companies also continued to perform positively. A total of 54.55% increased their turnover, 27.27% maintained similar results and only 18.18% experienced a decline. These results indicate that visitors to Menorca are showing increasing interest in exploring the island, although the average number of rental days continues to fall.

The retail sector improves its results

The retail sector recorded one of the most positive outcomes in the survey. A total of 46.90% of the businesses consulted increased their turnover compared with June 2025, while 20.35% registered a decline and 32.74% maintained similar figures.

However, some retailers point out that periods of high temperatures can reduce customer numbers in shopping areas during certain hours of the day.

Retail businesses also highlight that the positive performance in June coincided with the shopping voucher campaign promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands, which began in the middle of the month. In 2025, the campaign had mainly been launched from the end of May.

Initiatives of this kind help encourage spending in local shops, and their impact has not been limited to residents. Interest has also been detected among tourists and visitors who, after learning about the vouchers, requested them because they were also eligible to benefit from the scheme.

Holiday homes and nautical companies remain stable

Holiday rental properties continue to show solid performance. A total of 38.89% increased their turnover and the same percentage achieved results similar to those of the previous year, while 22.22% recorded a decline. Businesses in the sector indicate that last-minute bookings have been key to confirming the positive results.

Despite repeated attempts to downplay the importance of this type of accommodation, current trends show that it continues to be a fundamental pillar of Menorca’s accommodation network and local economy, helping to distribute tourism income among local businesses and households.

Nautical companies, meanwhile, recorded a balanced outcome: 45.45% maintained their turnover, 27.27% increased it and the same percentage experienced a decline. The favourable weather conditions in June enabled businesses in the sector to maintain demand at last year’s levels.

Restaurants and active tourism continue to face the greatest difficulties

Cafés, bars and restaurants continue to record less favourable results. A total of 44.64% of businesses reported lower turnover than a year ago, compared with 19.64% that improved and 35.71% that maintained similar results.

Active tourism remains the worst-performing sector in the survey. A total of 61.54% of businesses saw their turnover fall compared with June 2025, while only 15.38% improved and 23.08% maintained their figures.

Business owners in the sector highlight that direct demand performed better than bookings made through tour operators. They also believe that rising accommodation and transport costs are reducing visitors’ spending capacity when it comes to booking leisure activities in advance.

Caution ahead of the coming months

Although June produced an overall positive result, PIME Menorca believes that the performance of the summer months will provide a more accurate assessment of the 2026 tourism season.

Among the factors that, according to some business owners, may have influenced the month’s performance is the international geopolitical situation. This may have encouraged travellers to choose destinations perceived as safe, such as Menorca, over competing destinations in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Federation also considers it essential to closely monitor the performance of the main source markets and, in particular, tourist spending at the destination. This indicator will once again be decisive in assessing the season’s real profitability.
