Fira Arrels to celebrate its ninth edition on 19 and 20 September, with capers taking centre stage

This year, the Es Mercadal Exhibition Centre will once again become the focal point for local produce during a weekend in which producers, chefs and visitors will come together to celebrate everything that makes Menorcan gastronomy unique. The fair will bring together a wide selection of local exhibitors, offering visitors the opportunity to taste, purchase and discover, directly from the producers themselves, a representative selection of the finest products made on the island: from traditional cheeses and cured meats to wines, liqueurs, oils, honey and seasonal vegetables, among others.

According to the Councillor for Economy and General Services, Maria Antònia Taltavull, Fira Arrels is “the great celebration of the year”: a unique opportunity for producers and visitors to meet face to face and highlight “recipes and products that must not be allowed to disappear”.

One of this year’s main new features is the special focus on capers, an emblematic island product that will feature both in the live cooking sessions and in some of the products on display. Live cooking demonstrations will once again be at the heart of the programme, with local and Balearic chefs preparing dishes using products supplied by the exhibitors themselves and showcasing creative ways of interpreting traditional ingredients.

The programme will also include live music performances and several events recognising the work of the island’s agri-food and craft sectors. A children’s area will also offer activities and workshops related to gastronomy and local culture.

Arrels forms part of the work carried out by the Department of Economy since the beginning of the current term to support local produce. “From the very first moment, we have wanted to support the primary sector and promote what is ours,” says Taltavull, who highlights the department’s close relationship with land and sea producers as one of the main pillars of its work.
