Constitution of the "Academy of Cuisine, Wine and Gastronomy of the Balearic Islands"

The new Academy of Cuisine, Wine and Gastronomy of the Balearic Islands has begun its activity, holding its first constitutive meeting on 14 November.

The Academy of Cuisine, Wine and Gastronomy of the Balearic Islands was created by the Balearic Government on 13 June through Decree 23/2025 as a public-law corporation at the regional level, recognised as an “advisory body to the Government of the Autonomous Community and the public institutions of the Balearic Islands” in these areas. The main objectives of the new Academy, which will have a Balearic-wide scope, are “the study, research, preparation, defence, codification, preservation and dissemination of the traditional cuisine of the Balearic Islands and its wines.”

The new Academy has been promoted by the Association of the Academy of Cuisine and Wine of Mallorca, an institution founded in 1986 by a group of gastronomy enthusiasts from the Islands, coming from different backgrounds, with the aim of deepening research and dissemination of this great cultural heritage that is gastronomy. This group, which has met monthly without interruption for four decades, became an association in 2004 and has recovered, cooked and tasted more than 1,500 Mallorcan dishes, a legacy compiled in nine publications, now placed at the disposal of the new Academy of Cuisine, Wine and Gastronomy of the Balearic Islands.

The new Academy is composed of a plural and independent group of people of different ages, origins, academic backgrounds and professions, representing all sectors of gastronomy and wine: winemakers, restaurateurs, doctors, dietitians, historians, journalists, communicators, representatives of hospitality, administration, DO and IGT bodies, and the rural world. In total, 30 full members from Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

At the Extraordinary General Assembly of 14 November, the statutes governing the Academy were approved and the following people were elected as founding promoters: Gabriel Morell Solivellas, José Luis Roses Ferrer, Julio Martínez-Almoyna, José Ferragut Ferrá and Antoni Xavier Darder Alorda.

The Governing Board of the new Balearic Academy of Cuisine, Wine and Gastronomy is composed of: Gabriel Morell, president; José Luis Roses, vice-president; Antoni X. Darder, secretary; Pedro Gual de Torrella, treasurer; and Antonia M. Torres, Julio Martínez-Almoyna, Luis Fidalgo, Antonio Juaneda and María José Amengual, board members.

After the constitutive Assembly, a copy of the Academy’s Statutes was sent to Parliament for registration in the Register of Academies of the Balearic Islands and subsequent publication in the Official Gazette of the Community.
