The Menorca Island Council has renewed its collaboration agreements with the Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Mahón-Menorca Cheese to continue promoting one of the island’s most emblematic products and to reinforce institutional support for Menorca’s cheese-making sector.
The agreement, approved by the Island Council’s Executive Board, will allow the continuation of promotional initiatives aimed at strengthening the presence of Mahón-Menorca cheese in national and international markets while increasing the profitability of a product internationally recognised for its quality and uniqueness.
The dairy sector represents a key pillar of Menorca’s economic and productive fabric. This institutional investment directly benefits the entire value chain linked to the PDO, from livestock farms to cheese producers and aging specialists, while also contributing to job retention and job creation across the island.
Through this support programme, the Island Council seeks to enhance one of Menorca’s greatest competitive advantages: the promotion and international projection of Mahón-Menorca cheese as a product that reflects the island’s identity and has the capacity to open new markets and positively influence consumer habits across different audiences.
In this regard, the Department of Economy and General Services will contribute €250,000, covering 90% of the budget for the promotional action plan presented by the Regulatory Council, valued at €277,777. Of this amount, €217,277 will be allocated directly to promotional activities and €60,500 to indirect costs. The subsidised initiatives will take place between 16 November 2025 and 15 November 2026.
At the same time, the Menorca Island Council and the Regulatory Council have also formalised the renewal of the agreement for the use of the so-called “Building A” at the public Sa Granja estate in Maó, allowing it to continue serving as the institutional headquarters of the PDO Mahón-Menorca Cheese.
The new agreement guarantees the free use of a space of more than 340 square metres within this historic estate, traditionally linked to Menorca’s agricultural sector and owned by the Island Council. The agreement will remain in force for four years, with the possibility of a further four-year extension.
The transfer has been arranged through a direct allocation process, justified by the unique nature of the Regulatory Council, which is the only entity legally authorised to manage and oversee the Protected Designation of Origin. Its role is considered essential for safeguarding the quality, reputation and promotion of Menorca’s agri-food heritage.
Maria Antònia Taltavull, councillor for the department, stated that “the renewal of these agreements reflects the firm commitment of the Island Council to promoting local products and strengthening a strategic sector for Menorca’s economy.”
Taltavull also stressed that “the Regulatory Council plays a key role in guaranteeing the quality, traceability and prestige of a product that forms part of Menorca’s identity and represents an opportunity for economic growth and international visibility for the island.”
With these agreements, the Menorca Island Council reaffirms its commitment to the quality, traceability and promotion of Menorca’s agri-food products, ensuring that the Regulatory Council has the resources and infrastructure necessary to continue carrying out its work with full guarantees.
