Ciutadella has added seven new businesses to the “Emblemàtics Balears” catalogue, a Balearic Government initiative created to protect, promote and give greater visibility to long-established local shops. The town now has 21 registered businesses in the programme.
Several of the new additions are closely connected to food and local gastronomy. Ca na Maria - 1945, a traditional food shop, has been recognised as emblematic; Forn Curniola, a bakery and pastry shop, has received the same distinction, while Gelateria de Menorca has been listed as a rooted business with heritage value.
The remaining new members are Esparteria i Sabateria Can Magí, Electricidad Marqués, Ca n’Anglada – Coca Rossa and Mercería Casasnovas. They join fourteen Ciutadella businesses already included in the catalogue, such as Ca na Fayas, Ca na Riera, Forn Can Diego, Gelats Torres and Pastisseria El Diamante.
The programme aims to preserve traditional trades, distinctive products, long-standing businesses and premises with noteworthy architectural or cultural features. Businesses may be classified as rooted, historic or heritage establishments, while those meeting all three criteria receive emblematic status.
There are currently 406 registered businesses across 34 municipalities in the Balearic Islands. Menorca accounts for 65, with Mahón leading with 29, followed by Ciutadella with 21.
