The Island Council meets with Menorca’s fishermen to assess the impact of the Iran crisis

The Island Council of Menorca has met with representatives of the island’s fishing sector to learn first-hand about their needs and concerns regarding the consequences arising from the Iran crisis.

The meeting is part of the Council’s intention to listen to Menorca’s different productive sectors in order to assess the impact that the international situation may have on the island’s economy, especially in sensitive activities such as fishing.

Representing the Island Council were the first vice president, Carmen Reynés; the councillor for Economy and General Services, Maria Antònia Taltavull; and the island director for Economy, Alicia Martí. Representing the fishing sector were members of the fishermen’s guilds of Maó, Ciutadella and Fornells.

During the meeting, sector representatives expressed their needs, and the Island Council highlighted the importance of ensuring the continuity of a strategic sector from an economic, social and territorial perspective. It also reaffirmed its commitment to working in coordination with other administrations to support the sector and promote measures aimed at easing the burden on professionals.

The Island Council will continue to maintain contact with the stakeholders involved in order to monitor the evolution of the situation and defend the interests of Menorca’s fishing sector before the relevant authorities.
