Foodies on Menorca
Foodie travellers visiting Menorca on 8 October can complement their stay with a high-level cultural experience in Ciutadella. Organist Joan Seguí Mercadal, born in Barcelona in 1996 into a Menorcan family, will present a programme focused mainly on European organ music from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Seguí Mercadal began his musical training at an early age and later studied at the Escolania de Montserrat, the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, Berlin’s Universität der Künste and the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart. He is currently titular organist of the historic organ at the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar and assistant organist at the Sagrada Família.
The programme offers a journey through some of the major European Baroque organ traditions, with works by Girolamo Frescobaldi, Francisco Correa de Arauxo, Johann Jakob Froberger, Johann Caspar Kerll, Joan Cabanilles, Johann Adam Reincken and Dieterich Buxtehude.
Highlights include Frescobaldi’s Toccata Settima, Correa de Arauxo’s Tiento de medio registro de dos tiples de séptimo tono, Joan Cabanilles’ Pasacalles de primer tono and works by Buxtehude.
For foodie travellers, the concert is an excellent way to round off a day in Ciutadella: explore the historic centre, enjoy an early Menorcan dinner and then immerse yourself in the sound of the organ and the great European musical tradition.
