Department of Economy distributes 3,000 “Made in Menorca” shopping bags to promote local products

The Department of Economy and General Services of the Island Council of Menorca is launching a new initiative this Saturday, May 9, aimed at encouraging the consumption of local products and strengthening the role of the island’s traditional markets. Nearly 3,000 reusable “Made in Menorca” shopping bags will be distributed among customers at municipal and agri-food markets across the island.

The campaign will reach different market stalls throughout Menorca, especially those selling fresh products — fish, meat, fruit and vegetables — with the goal of rewarding consumers who support local businesses and kilometre-zero products.

Maria Antònia Taltavull, Councillor for Economy and General Services, highlighted the importance of supporting local producers and retailers:

“It is essential for citizens to support local products. On an island like Menorca, backing local commerce is key to ensuring sustainable, balanced economic development that respects our environment.”

The distribution of the bags will begin this Saturday at the agri-food markets in Ciutadella and Sant Lluís. Starting next week, the initiative will also reach the markets in Ferreries, as well as the island’s weekly markets: Sundays in Maó, Mondays in Fornells, Thursdays in Es Mercadal, and Wednesdays in Es Migjorn Gran and Ciutadella.

The reusable and environmentally friendly bags are also intended to become a symbol of commitment to responsible consumption and Menorcan products. Through the “Made in Menorca” brand, the Department of Economy encourages residents to share photos on social media using the bags and showing their support for local commerce.
