Ciutadella prepares for the total solar eclipse with a special safety and mobility operation

Ciutadella is preparing for a historic day on 12 August, when a total solar eclipse will be visible across Menorca. The municipality’s position at the western end of the island, together with its many open areas facing the western horizon, will make it one of Menorca’s most appealing locations from which to experience this exceptional astronomical event. Totality will begin to darken the island shortly after 8.30 pm. 

With a large number of observers expected, Ciutadella Town Council is preparing a special safety, emergency and mobility operation. Its aim is to enable residents and visitors to enjoy the eclipse under the safest possible conditions, while preventing overcrowding, traffic disruption and dangerous situations in sensitive natural areas. 

The municipality’s official observation areas will be Cala en Blanes, Son Oleo-Son Blanc, Cala Blanca —areas B and C— and the Cap d’Artrutx seafront promenade. Local Police officers will carry out both fixed and mobile controls at all these locations. The Balearic Government nevertheless stresses that official observation areas are not necessarily the places offering the best view. They have been selected because the authorities can better guarantee public safety and manage attendance there. 

Traffic will be closed in the official observation areas from 5 pm, although restrictions may be brought forward if visitor or vehicle numbers require it. Vehicle access to Punta Nati lighthouse will be closed from 8 am. Cala Morell, Punta Nati and Pont d’en Gil have been identified as sensitive locations and will also be monitored by the Local Police. 

To allow people to follow the eclipse without travelling, a large screen will be installed in Plaça des Born, broadcasting IB3’s live coverage. The Municipal Emergency Plan will be activated the previous day, and the operation will involve all available Local Police officers and eighteen firefighters on duty. 

The Town Council stresses that the Sun must only be viewed through ISO 12312-2:2015 certified eclipse glasses. It must never be observed directly or through binoculars, cameras or telescopes without suitable filters. Visitors are also advised to carry water and a headlamp and to avoid unnecessary journeys. As the eclipse takes place during a period of high wildfire risk, lighting fires, using heat sources, discarding cigarette ends or leaving waste in the countryside will be strictly prohibited.
