The legacy of Torre-saura: two routes to discover Menorca’s aristocratic and rural heritage

Since last July, the legacy of the County of Torre-saura has been offering two experiences that reveal two complementary sides of Menorca’s history: the aristocratic life of Ciutadella and the rural heritage that has shaped the island’s landscape for centuries. The guided tours are run by Talaia Cultura, a company specialising in cultural tourism.

Every Tuesday at 6.00 pm, visitors can step inside the Palace of the County of Torre-saura, one of Ciutadella’s most emblematic historic buildings. Meeting at the palace reception, the guided tour explores the history of the house, its architecture and interiors that preserve traces of the lifestyle of Menorca’s great aristocratic families. Noble rooms, period furniture and works of art help bring part of Ciutadella’s social history to life.

On Thursdays, also at 6.00 pm, the route moves to ses Truqueries, departing from its car park. Here, dry-stone building takes centre stage, an ancestral technique that has played a decisive role in shaping the Menorcan landscape. Walls, shelters and other traditional structures reveal how generations of farmers used the island’s stone to organise the land and adapt it to agricultural and livestock needs.

For foodie travellers, both experiences offer an opportunity to better understand the landscape behind Menorcan cuisine. Rural estates, farming, livestock breeding and agriculture are closely connected to many of the products and recipes that define the island’s gastronomy today.

A visit to the palace can be combined with a walk through Ciutadella’s historic centre and dinner in the city, while ses Truqueries invites visitors to continue exploring the rural landscape and local producers. Tickets are available at the reception of the Torre-saura Palace, and information and bookings can be found at www.fundaciontorresaura.com.
